Silk or lawn? Choosing your cloth by season

The right cloth makes an outfit feel effortless. The easiest way to choose is to start with the season, then think about the occasion.

Spring and summer

Lawn, linen and chiffon are your friends in warm weather. Lawn is light and cool, linen is breathable and relaxed, and chiffon floats on the lightest breeze. Cotton works across the year and is especially good for everyday wear.

Autumn and winter

As the weather cools, silk and velvet come into their own. Silk drapes beautifully and is lovely in rich autumn colours. Velvet is warm and dramatic, perfect for winter weddings.

Think about the occasion

For everyday wear, choose cotton, lawn or linen that washes easily. For festivals, look at silk and jacquard. For weddings, silk, organza and velvet are traditional choices.

Think about care

Silk, organza and velvet are usually dry clean only. Cotton, lawn and linen can generally be washed at home. If you want low-maintenance cloth, lean towards the washable end.
